Tornados in Oklahoma

We know everyone is anxious to assist with the tragic events today in Oklahoma. We are waiting to hear which agencies will take the lead in animal rescue efforts and will pass along that information and what their needs are as soon as we have it. Please note that "supplies" are usually not useful and often hinder efforts so we will hold off on collecting donated items until and unless we hear that something specific is needed.
In nearly all disasters, the two main needs are financial donations and space to hold strays while they try to reunite them with their families. HSFM has committed to taking 10-14 puppies at this time from Central Oklahoma Humane Society in OKC, who took in over 30 stray dogs Monday night alone. These dogs will be available for adoption or transported to our partners at Helping Hounds Dog Rescue over the coming weeks through our Love On Wheels program.
We can only help as many dogs as we have fosters for. Every spot we open up there could be space for a dog whose family is looking for him or her! If you want to help in that effort, please download and complete the foster form and indemnity release and email them to us at wheels@hsfm.org so that we can start the approval process. YOUR OWN ANIMALS MUST BE UP-TO-DATE ON VACCINATIONS IN ORDER TO FOSTER. Please be sure to include the name and number of the veterinarian who can confirm your pets' vaccination history.
These dogs have been temperament tested, are dog friendly, not pit bulls, and not senior dogs. Most will be puppies from 8 weeks to 4-5 months. If you can open your home to one of these dogs for approximately 3-4 weeks, please email us at wheels@hsfm.org as soon as possible. We will be headed to OKC Wednesday morning to pick up dogs and will need foster homes committed before we leave.
Our thoughts are with our neighbors to the north as well as our friends Bob Deeds and Vickie Taylor, who have deployed with their search dogs to OKC. Please stay safe everyone, and get those disaster kits (http://www.redcross.org/prepare/location/home-family/pets) ready. Storm season isn't over.
