notomys.mordaxEach and ever pet store is different, even eetwebn big chain stores, in terms of their general animal husbandry. The Petco near my house is managed by a man whom has pet rats of his own, and thus most of the small animals there are socialized, friendly, and healthy. The animals are also taken care of behind the scenes as well (they have let me see animals that have just come into the store, and are being quarantined in the back) however this is not always the case. While most people would caution against purchasing from a pet store, and supporting and industry which is questionable at best, if you do not have any local breeders or rescuers, it may be your only option. Most of us "rat snobs" are guilty of purchasing rats from pet stores that have given us the "pwease take me home" eyes. The biggest thing to remember is that rats from pet stores are often not bred with the same careful dedication that rats from breeders are, so they may be more likely to have genetically linked temperamental and health problems. "Rodent Mills" offer up pretty much the same ethical questions as puppy mills bring up. The thing to keep in mind is that animals from pet stores are1) more likely to harbor unknown genetic problems so you should try to avoid breeding animals purchased from a petstore at all costs2) animals bought from a petstore are more likely to be unsocialized rats will generally warm up to people pretty quickly however.3) rats purchased in a petstore maybe kept in stressful situations, making them more prone to disease.I'd say go for it. If you are really concerned about supporting a pet store, I would purchase your pets from PetSmart and then purchase their cages and supplies (much more expensive than the pet) at another store. However in my area, small, locally owned pet stores frequently keep their animals in MUCH worse condition than the big chains.

Tim - Holly has had whisker-enhancement rgeursy. It's a little-known cosmetic rgeursy for cats suffering from whiskers-envy, it basically utilises extensions from voluntary donor animals with excess whiskers. The results are quite good, no? You wouldn't have been able to tell they were Walrus whiskers otherwise if I hadn't told you ..
