The Heat is On!

Texas weather changes every minute, and with spring storms and summer heat waves here, make sure your pet is safe from the elements. Here are a few tips:

Don't leave your pet outdoors in stormy or hot weather.

Make sure your pet has plenty of fresh water.

Make sure your dogs are on heartworm preventative.

Plan! Know what to do with your pets if tornado or severe weather is headed your way.

If you see an animal left out in the heat, please speak up. Talk to its owner, or notify your local police or animal control. When talking to neglectful pet owners, don't be accusatory or irate. Please speak in a rational and civil manner. Education is often a cure for animal neglect and cruelty.

Great Legislative Year for Animals!

It's official! Horse slaughter is dead in Texas. Chaining a dog 24 hours a day is illegal here. You can't abuse a stray cat or your own dog without penalty anymore. You still can't "trip" horses. Animal abusers will not be able to appeal a court's ruling that their seized animals be turned over to other agencies for adoption. As a totally unexpected bonus, livestock animals are protected in much the same way as dogs and cats. Dog fighters will face stronger penalties. The funds from Animal Friendly license plates will be made available for low-cost spay/neuter programs as originally intended. Municipalities are required to provide for pets in their disaster plans.

This was a GREAT year for animals in Texas! Your calls and letters made a huge difference--never doubt that your calls matter! Last night, my senator's office knew exactly what I was talking about when I called about the horse slaughter amendment (which was never introduced) and told me they "were watching for it." Legislators heard us loud and clear this year and understood that animals matter to us.

Last--we're feel certain that THLN (Texas Humane Legislation Network) is nearly broke after paying lobbyists to do all this good work this year...your donation, while not tax-deductible because they are a lobbying non-profit organization, will make their job much easier. You can make that donation and see some of the good work they do at www.thln.org ...be sure to tell them HSFM sent you! :) The work they do is beyond measure and helps more animals than we can ever hope to with rescue alone.
